In this episode of New England Scuttlebutt, I’m getting my hands dirty with Second Story Builders to learn about the world of radical reuse—and why sometimes the best way forward starts with carefully taking something apart. Instead of simply demolishing old buildings and sending valuable materials to the landfill, Second Story Builders deconstructs them piece by piece, salvaging lumber, fixtures, hardware, and other materials that still have plenty of life left in them. It’s about seeing value where others might see waste and giving pieces of New England’s past a chance to become part of something new. But what really makes their mission special goes beyond the materials they save. Second Story Builders is also teaching the next generation the skills, craftsmanship, and mindset behind deconstruction and reuse passing along knowledge that could otherwise be lost and showing young people that there’s another way to build, create, and think about our resources. I didn’t just want to hear about radical reuse, I wanted to be part of it. So come along as I step onto the job site, learn how deconstruction is done, and discover how Second Story Builders is saving pieces of the past while helping build a more thoughtful future.
